Butterfly Meets Narwhal

During our recent hospital stay, our window looked out upon a construction site. It was right in the middle of what used to be the back parking lot.  Our nurse told us that they’re building a new addition to the hospital, a whole new tower.

And that’s when I got the idea.

A new tower is going to have empty walls that need art!

What if I could create a some art to donate to the children’s hospital? Being able to give a piece of artwork, in honor of my sweetie Knox, would give me so much joy!

So I called the hospital today and got the scoop.

There’s an art committee that meets once a month.  They review submissions and make decisions regarding the acceptance of art for the hospital.

I’m going to start brain-sketching (brain storming with a pen!) and see what I can come up with.  I’m also asking my kids to collaborate on the idea and see what they come up with.

‘Butterfly Meets Narwhal’ is my first sketch.  It’s pretty simple, but it’s a start.

After I have several ideas I’ll pick one or two of my favorites and paint them onto canvas, possibly combining several of them into one large design.

All of the drawings that I don’t use, I’ll just compile into a coloring book to give to siblings at the annual Cockayne Syndrome retreat this summer and sell it in my Etsy shop.

It feels good to have a goal like this!  It’s like the opportunity found me just when I needed it.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog, have a great weekend!

  1. Love the idea – and I just love the Narwhal meets Butterfly. I hope the Committee says YES! What a beautiful gift in honor of cutie patootie. He is so precious ~ xoxo

  2. All of my lucky vibes are heading your way. Your artwork is so sweet that it would be a wonderful view for patients to look at. The coloring book is a good idea too.

  3. What a wonderful way to pay it forward. You know how much that artwork means to people that have to be there, how many times a parent and child stop and admire and talk about it. You have such a gift and I love the ways you find to use it.
Thank you so much from a mom and a son that spent a lot of time looking at art in hosp. hallways. My favorite at Children’s hosp. in Cincinnati was a picure of Mrs Noah cleaning the ark and all of the animals were sitting on the deck watching her and that was from 30 some years ago.

  4. Love it! That’s how things happen; we are blessed by being a blessing. ~s

  7. This loving, generous spirit that you possess is only one of the reasons that you are loved… I think it is also what your artwork is shows time and time again. I just know that the art committee is going to want you work hanging on the walls, it will touch so many parents and their children! Your narwhal and butterfly piece is so sweet and coming along nicely! I’m sure your kids will have some great ideas to share to!

  12. I forgot to tell you! The little girl in the collage (or whatever it is 😉 is cut out from a collage sheet – but in general, I don’t usually use copies. Maybe I should, but there’s something so special about the originals, right? However, I wouldn’t paint over a real picture like that . . . I hope you’re having a great weekend, xoxo

    • @Kristin –Oh, ok, thanks! I bet the collage sheets are made to where they won’t bleed/tear if you paint over them then…that’s the way to do it! I agree, I love originals, too, there is something about those you can’t duplicate with copies. Thanks so much!

  13. What a beautiful way to spread joy and happiness! I hope your lovely art gets a chance to grace the halls and lift the spirits of the children. 🙂
