Christmas Owls, Package Toppers

My old gray wool skirt.

Style: outdated

Size: outgrown

I decided to cut it up and make package toppers.

I had black and white toile scraps leftover from re-covering a chair, along with some assorted trims and vintage buttons.

I cut out simple shapes for the bodies, wings, and front pockets (to put stuff in).

I also cut a pattern out of the toile to see what it would look like.

I sewed the eyes, beaks, and pockets onto one of the front pieces, then sewed the two body pieces together, filling them with a bit of poly-fil stuffing.

Lastly, I sewed on the wings and added the trims, bows, vintage buttons, and red berries.

Here’s #2…

She’s literary and has lines of poetry stamped on her scarf.

And here’s #3…

There are times when I’m working on a project and I just know something is wrong but I can’t put my finger on it. Does this ever happen to you?

Then when I see it posted on the computer screen, I see the problem right away!
Such is the case with this last one . She needed more contrast: gray for the pocket, perhaps, and black around the eyes.
Love this vintage button! It looks like glass.

I think they turned out so cute!

When I showed them to my 4 year old, however, he said, “They’re too pointy.”

Too pointy ?

Well, pointy or not, we now have 3 under our tree and I’m not telling ‘whoo’ they’re for. 🙂

  7. You have got to take sewing lessons sometime, Scarlett! With your extreme creativity, there is no end to what you could do with wardrobe possibilities for the girls. It would be a snap for you once you got past the basics and I know you have the perfect sewing machine from your Mom. You already have the handwork part down!

    • @Floy–Thanks, Floy!! It’s a time thing…you’re so sweet to say that, I actually have really tried to get the hang of the machine a few times…I get so far and then I get stuck and have no one to help me!! Plus, you can’t see the backs of these owls…haha.. knots here and there…threads going every which way…mother always said you can tell the skill level by looking at the back (yikes!) 🙂

  14. Absolutely adorable! Even I, the non seamstress, can make these, thanks to your detailed directions.
I think I would add a pin to the back so the little owls could be worn on a coat, scarf, etc.

    • @Daniele –You are so kind! I’m so glad you like the owls..that is so sweet of you to ask about the owls, these 3 are for three owl lovers that I know so I won’t be putting them up but I wish I had more time!! I had intended on making lots of Christmas card sets to list and didn’t even get one set made…I think I really need to start in January to have things ready to list in the shop for December! 🙂

  16. Absolutely adorable Scarlett! I love Owls, I think they are the Majestic of all the Bird creatures. And aloof. I like that in an owl.

  24. Susan Warnick

    Hi-

I love owls! I live in a rural farming community where there are lots of barns. Mostly during the summer and fall months , just at dusk, we catch a glimpse of these wonderful creatures flying across the sky. Or we hear them hooting. Love that.
Any chance you made an owl pattern? or just dimensions for the owl body and parts? My granddaughter loves them as much as I do. I thought I would try to make one for her. She would love your pocket idea.

    Thanks

    • Hi Susan, thanks so much, I’m glad you liked these little owls. We have a great-horned owl that lives in the woods near our house and it’s so cool to hear him at night. I actually just cut these out while I was waiting for my daughter in the car, I didn’t even print out a pattern. If you just cut out the general shape you see in the photo, they will turn out fine! I’d love to see your owl if you post a photo! Thanks again for your comment and Happy New Year! 😉
