It’s Christmas Time!
But…what is time?
The Christian theologian, Augustine of Hippo (354-430), explored
the mysterious concept of time in Chapter XI of Confessions.
He surmised that since the past no longer exists, the future does not yet exist,
and the present is always slipping into the past, time is immaterial and must
depend on something greater for its existence. Time cannot depend upon itself.
He argues only something eternal, outside of the flow of time, can account
for time’s existence. For Augustine, the concept of time reveals the necessity of God.
Here is a simplified summary of his reasoning:
Time is immaterial and must depend on something greater than itself for its existence.
God is greater than time; He is immaterial and eternal, existing outside the flow of time.
Therefore, God created time and sustains it.
This Christmas season, I created some special gifts combining chocolate and Augustine’s apologetic from time. I purchased an antique chocolate mold of St. Nicholas (Augustine for this project) and another antique mold of pocket watches.
Using Ghirardelli chocolate wafers, I created the chocolate pieces and then attached
the clocks using melted chocolate.
I brushed on edible gold luster dust and added edible stars, sugar pearls, and sugar sprinkles for extra sparkle.
After the chocolate molds were packaged, I created a custom clock tag using a rubber stamp embellished with gold embossing foil. Augustine’s argument is tucked into the tag!
