A Heart-Shaped Leaf and a Confession

I have a confession to make.

Some of you may remember that last Valentine’s Day I got the camera of my dreams.

I had been reading photography blogs and magazines for 2 years.  I was totally convinced that if I wanted to take artistic photographs I needed a good DSLR camera.  I had photography fever and an SLR was the cure.

I spent a lot of time convincing my husband that I needed it, too.

But now that I’ve had it for a year, guess what?

I didn’t need it.  A good quality point-and-shoot was more than able to take the photos I wanted to take.  It took having both the SLR and the PAS to learn this lesson. And now I’m passing on what I’ve learned.

If you’re tempted to shell out hundreds, dare I say thousands, for a fancy-schmancy SLR, just be sure you really need the power.

All the photos on my blog are currently taken with a Fujifilm Finepix F600 EXR.  It’s lightweight, fits in my pocket, and takes beautiful shots.

More Valentine’s projects coming up! Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I look forward to all your Valentine’s projects! Love the heart shaped leaf. I agree about the PAS cameras and not shelling out thousands. My camera was $300 four years ago, and I love it.

  2. totally hun, I just got myself a Canon G12, its kind of midrange and I love it!!! lots of settings to boot and I haven’t been happier! 🙂

  3. I did exactly the same thing. What I like about my small camera is that it’s light weight and I can carry it everywhere; can’t do that with a bigger one 🙂

  4. All of my photos are taken with a PaS and I use Picasa to edit them. Easy-peasy. I wanted a fancy DSLR, but after really thinking about it, I don’t need one. I do need a new camera though. Maybe a PaS is in order. 😉

  5. Thank you for this… I have been feeling a bit like the odd man out when it came to my camera! I thought by the looks of your pictures that you had a big fancy schmancy one! I think I just need to practice with mine more. Love the heart shaped leaf! t.xoxooxo

  6. I agree….I just got a Canon and I love…point shoot and it takes great pictures…

and I got it on sale for a low price !! 🙂

  7. You’re absolutely right! It’s all about knowing your goal and what you want to do with the camera, as well as how much control you want over the settings. I loved my PaS and the pictures it took. I only upgraded to a DSLR because I started craving more control over the exposure, the rgb color setting, and the bokeh. My awesome PaS reached its limits for what I wanted to do, so I upgraded. But I still use it when I’m going somewhere where I can’t lug the big camera and the lenses.

I love that heart-shaped leaf by the way, and I can’t wait to see the valentine’s day projects.

  8. I was wondering if just purchasing the really good version of photoshop or something could take my Point n shoot to new levels. I mean, It does have 16 mp. Thank you for speaking to my curiosity.

  9. Well you certainly hit on this subject! Thank you!! I know that I won’t like lugging around a heavy camera and lenses and I know that I won’t take as many pictures. I will now QUIT thinking I am just resistant to change LOL Though I do think I am going to purchase a light box so I can get better shots during the dark winter months … Hugs,

  10. Your photos are always so gorgeous. I love the angles that you shoot the pictures from. Fantastic!!! Sometimes the simpler cameras are better and easier to use. All the best! Sophia
