Paper Bag Challenge for Somerset Life

I spiffed up these brown paper bags with varied paper media and duct tape.

Each bag features one of the more recent fashion acquisitions at the Met.

Duct tape makes a sturdy handle and the art elements can easily be torn off and saved.

I made the flower by letting puddles of glue dry on wax paper.  When the puddles began to stiffen, I shaped the puddles into flowers with my fingers and let them finish drying.  Then I peeled them off like stickers and glued them together to make the large flower.

While I was in the hospital with my son I spent hours cutting words from newspapers they brought me. I have a zip-loc bag full of words to use on projects. It’s fun to sort through them and try to find just the right ones.

I got this champagne colored glass glitter from Stampin’ Up. They sell the coolest stuff these days.

Words from my old French dictionary are always ‘dramatique’.

A dress made of metal.  Now that’s art.

I drew one eye with a fine tip pen and added a jewel on her forehead.  She needed to look as weird as her dress.

I’m going to try and get these shipped to Somerset Life for consideration.

The deadline for the paper bag challenge is May 15th.

  1. Good Luck Scarlett; I love your creations! I just read it and well, you should see my table now! I love the glue flower, how delicate and fab~ These are stunning; fun to see your unique, beautiful creations! I’ve been cutting up paper bags…lol I still may send them in, but now need a lunch bag. Thanks for sharing! YOU have a great chance of getting selected!!! xXx

Thanks Ellen! I had fun with them but you never know what Somerset will like….they’re such a mixed “bag” haha–maybe I need to burn the edges, rip off the bottoms and put wings on the dresses….lol.

I want to see yours. 🙂

Cool! I had to laugh out loud at how you made your glue flowers…many moons ago (when I was probably 3rd or 4th grade — MANY moons ago) we used this same technique to make fake fingernails which we would then apply and polish. I don’t think “sculpted nails” had been invented then. 🙂 Funny the memories that come from viewing art!

  3. Scarlett,
You made me laugh; yes, it is hard to know what will impress and then what are we being compared too?! I messed up big time; I will expose my bad self soon… I like yours just the way they are…wings have been over done. Burn the edges…sounds fun, lol. I misread it and cut paper bag up, painted them and glued all on kinds of stuff. I might just send them anyway. I asked my son who works part time at a grocery store and goes to college full time, to please bring me home some. He didn’t get the txt in time. I am heading out soon…may attach some of my weird creations on the bag. I’ll let you know when I decide to share~ ;-D
I love the glue flowers; so creative and unique! You know you have been published twice and third times the charm! xXx

  4. I mentioned you on my blog today ;-D

  5. They are gorgeous. I especially love the one with the butterfly dress and the glass glitter. Good luck, I really hope to see them in the pages of the magazine.

  6. These are awesome. I love the mix of colors and textures and feeling. If they don’t find a home at your first choice, there’s certainly a publication somewhere that would appreciate the how-to and illustrations. Just keep looking.

    Thanks for sharing these!
