One of my favorite Renaissance artists, Albrecht Durer, created many images of himself in his lifetime; his first self-portrait was drawn around age 13.
I always enjoy looking at artist’s self-portraits.
They can reveal so much without any words at all. (love this one). Many times, self-portraits reveal the artist’s emotional condition and what their situation in life was at the time it was executed.
I looked back through my blog posts and the last time I posted a self-portrait was about 2 years ago. It was a simple photograph, nothing fancy.
I’ve been blogging for a while now, but I still hesitate sometimes. Perhaps it’s because I know that some of my art may seem strange, not fitting the mold of the homeschooling housewife living in suburbia, who really should be knitting or something instead of posting wierded-out photos of herself!
You might even be inspired to create a self-portrait of your own. In 10 years, you’ll be glad you did.
Hi Scarlett .. I love the butterfly self-portraits .. weaving layers to ‘hide’ behind .. I don’t know what Cockayne Syndrome is – but it seems extremely challenging for you and your son .. my thoughts are with you. I’ll find out and be around ..
I like learning and know little about art – just always happy to learn a little more .. Albert Durer’s work has always fascinated me.

My family thought I was crazy; I had a butterfly ritual, when I developed thyroid disease. The gland is shaped like a butterfly; I was 35 and had make up on Orange monarch like. My mother n’ daughter participated with me. I had a moving experience which I shared here:

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your self portraits! I miss you, friend! I love catching glimpses of your heart on your blog. Very tastefully done. You WILL be VERY glad you have these in the distant years to come. I love them!

These are beyond beautiful. If this Christian walk can’t encompass your current experience what’s the use? There certainly is no mold that you should ever fit in especially now. Your artwork has always been so meaningful but your ability to express yourself and your creativity have increased exponentially. I am so sorry that it has taken this trial to lead you deeper into your expression. Again, thank you for including all of “us” in your journey. Still praying daily.
