This was the miniature sea painting that inspired the 30″ X 40″ canvas for my bedroom.
Quite a difference in size!
I don’t have an art studio so when I need to paint something large it winds up being painted in the bathroom. (sigh)
I mixed up the paint colors as close to the soft colors in my new bedding as possible. The paints were also mixed with a generous amount of soft gel medium.
Determined to keep this project simple,I only painted three areas of color: sand, sea, and sky.
I experimented with my cake frosting spatula. I liked the way it smoothed out the color across the canvas.
Using a paper towel, I rubbed some space out of the sky and brushed some muted yellow into the spaces for the sun.
Here’s the picture that’s been in my room forever and doesn’t go with the new bedding.
And here’s the new picture I painted in about an hour, mixing up the colors to match myself.

I see you reuse the frozen food plastic dishes too. They are my grout dishes! Paintings don’t have to be compicated. Look at David Bromberg–he often paints with house painting brushes and does great pieces! Blue is very restful, you will like it in your bedroom.

I love it! The simplicity just adds so much to the overall appeal of the painting! This would also be gorgeous done on some old barnwôod planks of similar size. I remember my very first painting when I was 12 years old. My mom was taking painting classes and I wanted in so bad! Lol. She didn’t want me practicing on her expensive canvas so I dug out a leftover piece of Sheetrock I found in the attic. Lolol. She had it framed and hung in my childhood home for many years. Ever since you just never know what I may find to paint on!

I love the mini canvases as well as the large one you painted for your bedroom. I’ve been wanting to try something like this for our condo on Sanibel Island. Would you mind telling us what six colors your used? I also saw on Pinterest where someone painted the background very similar to yours, then using shells they found on the beach glued them onto the canvas in the simple Christmas tree shape. Thank you.

From one self-taught artist to another: one small critique is that you need to reflect your sun into the water and the sky a bit. Take some of your soft yellow and REALLY dilute it with your gel medium, then do more vertical squiggles in the water and some soft splashes in the clouds.
Also, you might want to think about bringing some of the blues in your ocean down into the sand as textural elements.

Really enjoy looking at this painting. I used to live near the beach in south Florida and this reminds me so much of a very special place! I have been trying to paint beach scenes but can’t seem to get the color of the sand to match photos I have made. Would you please tell me what colors you mixed? I am getting close with Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber and Cadmium Yellow Light. Thanks.
