Photos-“Black Swallowtail Butterflies”

The butterflies finally came out!!

Our two plump parsley caterpillars we caughton our carrots emerged from their chrysalises.

Isn’t she pretty? It’s amazing to me that the only markings that remained from her caterpillar costume were the yellow spots on her body.

The first one hatched when we weren’t paying attention, so we checked on the second one often and caught it just in time.  Here she is,  brand new…

We took her out of the tent too early–you can see her wings are still wet and gooey, like damp tissue paper.

Since she couldn’t fly until her wings were dry, she started to climb up the net.  We watched for a while so some eager bird didn’t fly by and eat her up.

She climbed and climbed up the net, almost to the top.  Then she stayed there for about an hour.

Before we knew it, she flew away to a nearby tree.  Goodbye butterfly! And thanks for the science lesson!
