Turning a Spool into a Pin

Here’s another gift idea using spools.

Turning a wooden spool into a pin is fairly simple, but I want to share two things I learned making this one.

First, wrapping a small rubber band around the base of the flower helped it to stick down into the hole at the top of the spool. This allowed more flower to come in contact with the glue and get a better hold.

Second, it took a strong glue.  I like Dura-Tac but you could use any strong commercial strength adhesive.

Put some glue in the center of the flower and then stick the straight-pin through the flower.  Apply glue all around the top of the spool, letting some run down into the hole as well. Insert the base of the flower into the hole of the spool and give it several minutes to dry.

It looks pretty with just the flower.  Wouldn’t it be fun to have a bulletin board full of different colored spool pins with flowers on top?

I went ahead and dolled this one up some more by wrapping some pink cheesecloth around it.  When our strawberry jelly is almost gone, I’ll wad up some cheesecloth and stick it down into the jar, pour a little warm water in it and let it sit. It turns this lovely shade of pastel pink.

Then I glued a silver button and another small piece of cheesecloth on top.  The button was missing its loop underneath, so it fit flat.

Then I found a little discarded silver charm from a broken necklace.

I got my black StazOn ink and a Stampin’ Up rubber stamp.

I only inked the word ‘joy’…

And stamped it onto the metal charm.

I tied the charm onto the spool around the base of the flower.

Now the push-pin is as pretty as can be and ready to pin a special photo.

Here’s one of my favorite photos of little Knoxer around 8 months, photo by Jessie Louise Photography.
